1636 The Parker family origins

On the 21st of May, 1636, William Parker (aged 17), together with his wife Mary, were embarking on the "Matthew" ship in Dover, leaving England and emigrating to the New World, America. They established and began a new life in Connecticut New England. William and Mary Parker were the first generation of the Parker family settled on American soil, being the direct grand-grandparents of George Parker (the future founder of the Parker company).

1863

1863

1863 George Safford Parker was born

1st of November, 1863 is the birthday of George Safford Parker (who was going to found Parker) in Shullsburg Wisconsin. He was the seventh child out of the eight in the Parker family.

1871

1871

1871 The childhood

The background of George Parker's childhood is represented by the farm of his parents from Fayette Iowa, where he spends much time in the fields, having little time to devote to school and study. Instead, we can observe George's entrepreneurial talent since that time. He has selling magazines and newspapers, making a profit of 50 cents on each dollar invested.

Ever since that period, Parker began to think about a career. He initally wanted to become a doctor. Because of the poor financial situation of his family, he was unable to follow his dream. Instead, he dreams to travel. In that period, this was one of the best ways to learn telegraphy. Like the majority of teens, the new technology fascinated George. That time, the railways were spread all around the country and telegraphers were needed at each station. In 1880, he left the parental home in order to enroll at Upper Iowa University. Surprisingly, he failed the entry exam. Undeterred, after a while he attempted at Valpariso University of Indiana, but the result was the same.

1880

1880

1880 The beginnings of the career

George was an avid reader of the popular magazine "The Youth's Companion". One day, he found an announcement of the Valentine telegraphy school in Janesville, Wisconsin. The temptation was overwhelming. He squeezed 55 bucks and went to Janesville where he enroll in the school (the school founded in October 1872). He proved to be a very capable student, with real inclinations in learning Morse code. Shortly thereafter, he successfully finalised the studies. After gradiation, George Parker committed as a telegraphist at Chicago Milwaukee & Sf. Paul Railroad Dakota. Lastly, he began the long awaited journey. Not long after that, he went back to the school of telegraphy, this time as a teacher. Out of his small wadge, he was only affording to pay the hotel room and the lunch at Myers House hotel (5 dollars per week). In order to meet the other expenses, George becomes a salesman for the John Holland Pen company at the same time, selling pens to his students and colleagues. Unfortunately, the quality of them was lacking and he felt obligated to repair them in order to maintain his reputation. He bought a series of simple tools that helped him to disassembly and repair these pens. Following this services, the sales increased. In the meantime, he gained experience and decided to eliminate the mistakes of others instead of repairing them, thinking of producing his own writing tools.

1882

1882

1882 The first steps

How did George Parker, a telegraphy instructor applying modern means of training, manage to become a magnate of modern writing instruments? He purchased about 300 sets of unbranded pen pieces from components manufacturers. The fine artistic elements were produced by a local jeweler. All of them were collected in his hotel room (which later became his first studio) and were assembled mainly at night. Expanding sales of pens beyond the students and colleagues from the Valentine - Janesville School of Telegraphy represented a problem. Fortunately, the hotel lobby where he lived (Myers House) was frequently passed by travelling merchants and sellers that were merchandising. To cover some of the large expenses, he unsuccessfully tried to convince his dad to invest $500 in his new business. He believed that the investment in the new, developing Parker Pen Company had been a very bad decission.

1888

1888

1888 Parker Pen Company Foundation

Increasing of sales would have been extremely slow and could even fail if George wouldn't have benefited from the luck of an unplanned meeting with William F. Palmer in the lobby of the Myers hotel of Janesville. William F. Palmer was an insurance broker and wanted to sell George a life insurance policy. Parker tells Palmer about his business and the financial hardships that were not allowing him to develop as he would have liked. Palmer immediately has the sight of the fact that Parker's business with pens could have a future. The two decide to join, setting up a new company in which Palmer brings a Capital of $1,000 in exchange for half of the Parker U.S. Copyright. When the hotel room of George Parker became too small for the pieces of pen, the new company rented a space on the top floor of the Myers House hotel and hired some workers. Pens were assembled during the night and sold the next day.

1892

1892

1892 The official registration of Parker Pen Company

In February, 1892, Parker Pen Company is registered at the Chamber of Commerce of Wisconsin. John Palmer was the president, a title which was more than honorary, because he was still dealing with selling insurance and business travel. His new role in the new founded company was mainly related to counseling. Instead, George Parker was the treasurer, but in reality he was holding a plurality of functions, being general manager, sales manager, advertising director and director of logistics. In short, he was holding the entire company in his hands.

1892 George Parker married

On November 24, 1892, George Parker, aged 29 years married Martha Clemens, a native of Chicago Illinois. After marriage, Martha moved to Janesville.

This limited edition is exclusively dedicated to the Russian market and is produced in two versions: a VIP version plated with solid gold and another standard version. The VIP version is not for commercial use, being offered to members of the Russian government and personalities of Saint Petersburg.
